Dementia: A Sad Joke
I was not even close to my mother growing up, yet I feel incredibly sad that she is dying. It's not fair. My mother suffered most of her adult life with a mental illness, and now this...the dementia taking her life away. It's like a sad joke. It's like she wasn't allowed to have a break. I was hoping she could enjoy this time of her life. I tried so hard to keep her safe and healthy. I tried so hard to make sure she got care. But I couldn't stop it. The disease won. Like a sad joke. She deserved better. This is such a cruel way for her to go. I was so nieve. I told myself that I wanted to take her to places she couldn't go while I was growing up. My Dad never took her overseas, for example. I honestly thought I could do that for her. And there was the possibility I could have.
